ABN Car Loan Requirements: The Full Eligibility Checklist

Tips 01 Sep 2026

ABN car loan requirements cover the evidence we need from a self employed applicant before approving vehicle finance, in place of the payslips a standard application would use. We’re Southern Cross Business Finance, a commercial finance brokerage based in Forest Hill, Melbourne. Here’s the checklist in full, so you know what to gather before applying rather than partway through.

The core requirements

  •       An active ABN. We require an ABN active with GST registration. How long it’s been active is one of the first things we check, since it establishes a baseline trading history.
  •       GST registration where turnover requires it. This gives us BAS lodgements as an independent, ATO-reported figure to cross-check against bank statements. Being under the threshold doesn’t rule out approval, but it generally means a longer bank statement history is required instead.
  •       Recent business bank statements, read for pattern rather than closing balance. Regular dishonours or an account that runs overdrawn most months counts against an application more than a modest average balance.
  •       Personal credit history. Even where the loan is assessed primarily on business evidence, we check the applicant’s personal credit file, reading past defaults in context rather than as an automatic decline.
  •       Evidence of the vehicle’s use, since this affects whether the loan is written as business purpose or standard consumer credit.

What if you can’t meet all of these?

Falling short on one requirement doesn’t automatically mean a decline. A newer ABN can often be offset by financing the vehicle itself as security, through a chattel mortgage, rather than seeking unsecured finance. This checklist describes what strengthens a file, not a strict pass-or-fail test.

How does this differ for a new ABN versus an established one?

An established ABN with consistent bank statement history over an extended period is generally the most straightforward file to place. A newer ABN narrows the options but doesn’t remove them, particularly where the vehicle itself can secure the loan — asking about an asset-backed structure before assuming an unsecured application is the only path is worth doing early.

ABN car loan requirements FAQs

Can I apply before I’m GST registered?

Yes, though a longer bank statement history is generally required to compensate for the missing BAS cross-check.

What if my bank statements show irregular income?

This is normal for self employed applicants, and we read for the overall trend rather than penalising any single low month.

Do I need an accountant’s letter?

Not always. It becomes more relevant for larger loan amounts or where bank statements alone don’t clearly establish income.

Check your file against this list before you apply

Meeting every item on this list isn’t essential, but knowing where your file is strong and where it’s thin makes for a much smoother application. We work across Forest Hill, Melbourne CBD and Mornington.
