Small Business Loans for Tradies: Options in Your First Years
Small business loans for tradies cover the finance options available in the early years of trading, when limited history makes standard lending criteria harder to meet. We’re Southern Cross Business Finance, a commercial finance brokerage based in Forest Hill, Melbourne. The options are narrower than for an established business, but they exist, and the right approach depends on what’s being funded rather than just how long the ABN has been active.
Why is finance harder to get in the first year or two?
We lean on trading history because it’s the clearest evidence a business can service a loan. A trade two months out of an employed role, doing the same work for largely the same clients, still reads as a new business on paper, whatever the underlying work is worth. In most cases this is a documentation problem rather than a viability problem, which is why it’s worth addressing directly.
What do we look at instead of trading history?
Three things carry more weight than usual: the strength of your personal credit file, since the business has little history of its own; whether the amount requested is asset-backed, since a recoverable asset changes the risk profile; and evidence of contracted or upcoming work, which substitutes for a trading record you haven’t built yet.
A signed contract or a standing subcontract arrangement, supplied upfront rather than on request, does more for a thin file than almost anything else available in year one.
Financing an asset versus borrowing cash
This is the most useful lever available to a newer trade business. Borrowing cash unsecured against a business with no trading history is a hard sell. Financing a specific tool, vehicle or piece of equipment, where the asset itself is the security, is a considerably easier conversation. We arrange equipment and vehicle finance through chattel mortgage, leasing, hire purchase and rental structures, which cover most first purchases for a newer trade business.
What if there’s genuinely nothing to finance and no contract to show?
Worth answering honestly. A first year trade with no assets to finance and no contracted work ahead is a genuinely difficult file, and our advice is sometimes to wait a quarter and build the bank statement history rather than force an application likely to be declined. A recorded decline makes the next application harder, not easier.
Small business loans for tradies FAQs
Can I get a loan before I have a full year of trading?
It’s possible, particularly for an asset-backed purchase, though the options narrow the shorter the trading history.
Is it better to wait before applying?
Sometimes. If there’s no asset to finance and no contracted work to demonstrate, a few more months of bank statement history can genuinely improve a later application.
What documents help most for a new tradie business?
A signed contract or subcontract arrangement, recent bank statements, and evidence of the specific asset being financed, where relevant.
Start the conversation before you assume the answer is no
A thin trading history narrows the options for a small business loan, but it doesn’t close them. We can talk through what’s realistically available at your stage rather than assuming a decline before you’ve applied.
