Tradie Car Loans: Financing a Ute or Work Vehicle
Tradie car loans finance a ute, van or work vehicle for a self employed tradesperson, assessed against the trading position of the business rather than a payslip. We’re Southern Cross Business Finance, a commercial finance brokerage based in Forest Hill, Melbourne. The vehicle finance itself is ordinary; what changes is the income evidence a trades income pattern requires.
How is a tradie car loan different from an ordinary car loan?
An employee applying for car finance is assessed on payslips. A tradie applying for the same vehicle is assessed on ABN history, business bank statements and, where the vehicle is genuinely for business use, a business purpose declaration. This opens up low doc assessment as an option: a tradie whose current year is trading strongly, but whose last tax return reflects an earlier and thinner year, can often be assessed on bank statements instead of waiting for the next return to catch up.
What structure suits a work vehicle?
For a vehicle used predominantly for business, we’d generally compare a chattel mortgage first. The vehicle itself becomes the security and ownership sits with you from day one. We arrange chattel mortgage, leasing, hire purchase and rental structures for exactly this kind of purchase. Where the vehicle is a mix of business and private use, which is normal for a sole trader, the finance is typically written according to predominant use — your accountant can confirm that split before any declaration is signed.
What do we check?
Four things carry the most weight: how long the ABN has been active, whether the business is GST registered, what recent bank statements show, and personal credit history. We require an ABN active with GST registration. We read bank statements for pattern rather than balance — an account that runs overdrawn regularly does more damage to an application than a modest average balance.
Tradie car loan FAQs
Does the vehicle need to be used only for business?
Not necessarily, but predominant use matters. A vehicle used mainly for business can usually still be financed as business purpose even with some private use.
Is a tradie car loan the same as a standard car loan?
The finance itself is similar. The difference is in assessment: income evidence comes from the business rather than a payslip, which changes what documentation is required.
Can I finance a second-hand ute or work vehicle?
Yes, used vehicle finance is available through the same structures as new vehicle finance, generally with the loan term matched to the vehicle’s age and condition.
